5 Holiday fashion suggestions

March 12, 2019

Cotton trousers or combats are great, as are plain T-shirts and shirts. Take a large, cotton scarf to cover your head, shoulders or any other cheeky bits should the necessity arise. A long skirt is essential: it’s modest, suitable for smart occasions, keeps you cool and is handy for loo-breaks. Let me explain: in a lot of countries, sit-down toilets are not the norm. If you have to squat over a hole in the ground, it’s much easier to stop a skirt from touching the less-than-lemony-fresh floor than it is to protect your trousers. Of course, there’s a dead simple solution to these fashion dilemmas. When you reach your destination, go to your nearest market, buy some fabric, take it to a tailor’s stall and get a local-style outfit made for you. In a matter of hours, you’ll have a unique, bespoke little number all of your own, and you’ll know it meets local standards.

It’s important to remember that the bigger your backpack is, the less likely it is that you’ll be able to carry it on the airplane. Additionally, since you can no longer bring liquids in containers larger than three ounces on airplanes if your bag has soap and liquids in it, you’ll be forced to check the bag. Most baggage sizes are 45 linear inches (22 x 14 x 9 in) or 115 centimeters (56 x 36 x 23 cm) including handles and wheels so if you get a backpack with those dimensions, you’ll be able to carry on. You won’t face any baggage fees from the major airlines for checking your bag when flying internationally. Budget airlines, on the other hand, charge a fee for checking a bag based on weight, so the more your bag weighs, the more you will have to pay to check it at the gate. Even though my bag fits in the overhead bin, I often have to check it when flying a budget airline.

Multiple compartments – A good bag must to have multiple compartments. This way, you can break up your belongings into smaller sections so it’s easier to access and find the stuff you need. For example, my clothes are in the main compartment of my bag, my umbrella and flips-flops in the top, and my shoes in the separated side compartment (that way they don’t get everything dirty). It saves having to dig around your bag.

Hiking gear : The third layer or core shell layer consists of a warm, windproof and waterproof jacket and trouser pants. Warm jackets are a minefield of complexity but typically split into two main types – down or synthetic (and some are insulated with wool). Down jackets are lighter and generally warmer than synthetic alternatives, but a lot more expensive and not great in wet or moist conditions.

Backpacking Essentials : The front compartment is a great place to store gear that you’ll need quick access to. Here is what I keep in mine. Maps: You should carry a map for all trips! Here is a wide selection of my favorite National Geographic Maps. Bug Spray: I keep this in a small plastic bottle. It took me forever to find good bottles which don’t leak. Here they are! First Aid & Emergency Kit: Bandaids, medical tape, waterproof matches, pain killers, antibiotic ( Neosporin ) , water treatment tablets by Katadyn, mole skin for blisters, + some additional odds and end. It is up to you to pack your first aid kit with what you need. This is what I need and doesn’t mean it’s the setup for everyone! Tooth Brush: Toob Refillable Travel Toothbrush Tooth Brush. You’ll thank me for this one. It’s great for backpacking, travel & road tripping. Soap: Camp Suds Biodegradable Soap. I no longer use soap while backpacking due to environmental and weight savings reasons. This is the stuff I used to take with me and it works great:) Camping Spoon: Titanium Long Handle Spoon Hiking shoes : Backpacking boots: These are designed to carry heavier loads on multiday trips deep into the backcountry. Most have a high cut that wraps above the ankles for excellent support. Durable and supportive, with stiffer midsoles than lighter footwear, they are suitable for on- or off-trail travel. Materials impact a boot’s weight, breathability, durability and water resistance. Synthetics: Polyester, nylon and so-called “synthetic leather” are all commonly found in modern boots. They are lighter than leather, break in more quickly, dry faster and usually cost less. Downside: They may show wear sooner due to more stitching on the outside of the boot.

Minimize your jewelry. Instead of piling your wrists with watches and bracelets, keep your accessories to a minimum. Nine times out of ten you will be asked to remove everything before going through airport security.
