Mahjong is a very old table game that was created in China. As with any quality product it was imported by many cultures around the globe. Mahjong is the most played game in China and one of the most famous game in the world, it has heavy relation to Feng Shui and contains many special meanings in the tiles themselves. Mahjong is a tile-based game that requires heavy amount of skill, strategy, decision making skills, and some luck. Mahjong consists of a pair of dice and 144 tiles labeled in Chinese characters and symbols, and commonly requires four people to participate.
In the 1920s, the British and Americans, also, started enjoying the game and as a result the rules evolved, again. Joseph P. Babcock, an American living in Shanghai during the 1920s, began exporting Mahjong sets back to the United States. He published a document called “The Official American Rules” in 1935 that simplified traditional rules for the foreign market and set the standard for American players. Babcock eventually sold the copyright to the game to Parkers Brother and the rules changed in order to satisfy the market. In the British Empire, the rules remained close to the Chinese traditional game.
It’s funny to note that this game used to be banned in China — the country it originated from. After the People’s Republic of China took control of the government in 1949, all gambling activities were prohibited including mahjong. It was not until 36 years that later people could enjoy this game legally. And now, thanks to the development of the Internet, mahjong appears as one subcategory of puzzle game. Source: Jogos 123.
It was not until the Cultural Revolution that the game was brought back into play minus the gambling element and people started to play it openly again. Finally, in 1985, it became legal again to play, and people in China and other Chinese communities began to play it in earnest again. At the same time, in the year 1920, another man was helping to increase the popularity of Mah Jong. Joseph Park Babcock published a book that laid out the rules of the game. This book, also commonly referred to as the “Red Book”, was called Rules of Mahjong. Babcock, who had learned how to play Mah Jong in China, took the rules of Mah Jong and made them a bit simpler and more streamlined to make things easier for Americans who would play the game.
